Cross-Platform App Development Cost (2026)
In short: a cross-platform app usually costs less than two separate native apps, because one codebase serves both iOS and Android. But the saving is not a fixed percentage, and anyone quoting one before seeing your feature list is guessing. In our own app cost calculator, a simple business app with user accounts and push notifications shows €11,500–€14,400 (about $12,900–$16,100) for iOS and Android together, against €7,000–€8,800 for one platform. What moves the budget most is features, integrations and design, not the framework.
This guide is for founders and product owners in the US and the Nordics who have seen "cross-platform" in a proposal and want to know what it does to the price. It shows real budget examples, what one codebase does and does not save, which platform share your market has, and what a cross-platform quote has to include.
What one codebase saves, and what it does not
Cross-platform frameworks share most of the app between iOS and Android. They do not remove every cost that comes with having two platforms.
| Part of the project | With one cross-platform codebase | What still costs money |
|---|---|---|
| Screens and business logic | Written once for both platforms | Adjustments where iOS and Android behave differently |
| Backend, database, admin panel | No change: you need one either way | The same cost as with native apps |
| UX/UI design | One design system | Review against both platforms' conventions |
| Testing | Shared test cases | Real devices on both operating systems; a shared bug can break both apps at once |
| Store publishing | One release process per version | Two listings, two reviews, an Apple Developer membership and a Google Play account |
| Device features and third-party SDKs | Plugins cover the common ones | Native code for anything a plugin does not cover well |
| Maintenance | One codebase to update | Both OS release cycles, plus keeping the framework itself up to date |
You will see claims that cross-platform "saves 30–40%". We have not found a credible public study behind numbers like that, so we do not repeat them. Ask for the same scope priced both ways instead; that is the only figure that applies to your app.
Budget examples from our calculator
These ranges come straight from the calculator on our app development page, with a flexible launch date. You can reproduce them yourself. They are indicative: the final price is set after a short consultation and depends on the detailed brief.
| Example | Platforms | Calculator range | About, in USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business app: accounts and push, standard design | One platform | €7,000–€8,800 | $7,900–$9,800 |
| The same app | iOS + Android | €11,500–€14,400 | $12,900–$16,100 |
| The same, plus payments and an admin dashboard | iOS + Android | €17,000–€21,300 | $19,100–$23,900 |
| E-commerce app: accounts, payments, push, custom UI/UX | iOS + Android + web | €23,900–€29,900 | $26,800–$33,500 |
Two things stand out. Adding payments and an admin dashboard moves the budget by more than adding the second platform does. And choosing "as soon as possible" for the launch raises the calculator's figure by 20%: the second example becomes €13,800–€17,300. USD figures use the ECB rate of 5 November 2026 (1.1224), the same rate as our pricing pages.
For wider context, the review platform Clutch reports that most app projects reviewed there fall between $10,000 and $49,999, while the average is $90,780. A few large projects pull that average up, so the range is the more useful number. Those figures cover all kinds of app, not only cross-platform ones.
Do you need both platforms on day one?
Cross-platform only saves money if you actually need both platforms. Look at your market first. StatCounter's October 2026 figures show that the answer differs across the Nordics more than most people expect:
| Market | iOS | Android | What it suggests for version one |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 51.96% | 48.02% | Close to even: plan for both |
| Sweden | 55.59% | 44.40% | iOS leads, but Android is too large to skip for long |
| Norway | 51.74% | 48.25% | Close to even: plan for both |
| Denmark | 67.06% | 32.92% | iOS-first is defensible for a small test |
| Finland | 31.95% | 68.04% | Android-first is defensible for a small test |
A market share is not your customer base. StatCounter measures mobile web usage across all users, and a premium B2C audience or a field-service workforce can look very different. If you already have a website or an existing app, check your own analytics before you decide. Launching on one platform can lower the first invoice, but a cross-platform codebase keeps the second platform cheap to add, which is often the reason to choose it even for a single-platform start.
Flutter or React Native: does the framework change the cost?
Rarely by much on its own. The bigger cost question is which skills your team and future hires have.
- Flutter is positioned by its makers as a way to build multiplatform apps from a single codebase. Apps are written in Dart.
- React Native apps are "written in JavaScript, rendered with native code", according to its documentation, so React primitives map to native platform UI. It can suit companies that already have React developers.
Choose on your own situation: existing developers, the SDKs you depend on and the design you need. Any serious proposal should explain the choice for your product. On our projects the specific stack is chosen based on project goals, budget and future development requirements; read native vs. cross-platform for the general trade-offs.
When cross-platform costs more than you expected
- Heavy device features. Background processing, Bluetooth, AR, advanced camera work and home-screen widgets often need native code on each platform.
- Nordic login and payments. BankID, Vipps MobilePay and Swish rely on switching to another app and back. The agreements and test environments add project time whatever framework you use; see our Nordic app development guide.
- Heavily custom controls. Standard components come with most accessibility behaviour built in, but custom ones need extra work. That matters if the European Accessibility Act applies to your EU consumers.
- Graphics-heavy apps. Games and demanding animation are where native still makes the most sense.
- A web wrapper in disguise. A quote for an "HTML5 app" may be a website inside an app shell. It can be cheap, but Apple's guideline 4.2 says an app should "elevate it beyond a repackaged website", so a thin wrapper risks rejection.
The costs on top of the build
| Item | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Developer Program | 99 USD per membership year | Needed for the App Store |
| Google Play developer account | US$25, one time | New personal accounts also need a 14-day closed test with at least 12 testers |
| Apple commission on digital sales | 15% under the Small Business Program | For developers up to 1 million USD in proceeds a year; you must enrol. Above that the standard rate applies |
| Google Play fees on digital sales | 10% on subscriptions, 20% on other new-install sales, plus a 5% billing fee | Standard rates for the US, UK and EEA since 30 June 2026; other markets differ. Check Google's table before modelling revenue |
| Hosting and third-party services | Depends on usage | Grows with users and data: payments, maps, SMS, email, analytics |
| Support and updates | Agreed per project | We include one year of free technical support with every completed app |

What a cross-platform quote must spell out
- The framework, and why it suits your product.
- Which features need native code, and who writes it.
- Devices and OS versions tested on each platform.
- Design scope: one shared design or platform-specific adjustments.
- Backend and admin panel: included, or assumed to exist.
- Store publishing for both platforms, under your own accounts.
- What happens after launch: OS updates, framework upgrades and the terms of support.

Building it from Czechia
VIA Marketing is based in Prague and builds Android and iOS apps for startups and businesses. For Nordic companies that means the same working day as Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, one hour behind Helsinki, under the same GDPR rules. For US companies Central Europe is "far nearshore": about two office hours overlap with the East Coast, so we schedule calls in that window and keep everything else in writing. Our nearshore guide covers how to run a project like this.
Our packages start from €4,900 (about $5,500), €9,900 (about $11,100) and €19,900 (about $22,300), with enterprise and fintech projects priced individually. See our mobile app development service for what each includes, try the calculator, or send us a short brief.
FAQ
How much does a cross-platform app cost?
It depends on scope. In our calculator a simple business app with accounts and push notifications shows €11,500–€14,400 (about $12,900–$16,100) for iOS and Android, and an app with payments and an admin dashboard shows €17,000–€21,300 (about $19,100–$23,900). These are indicative ranges; the final price follows a short consultation.
Is cross-platform always cheaper than native?
Usually, when you need both platforms and the app does not rely on heavy device features. It stops being cheaper when much of the app needs native code anyway. Ask for the same scope priced both ways rather than relying on a general percentage.
Is Flutter or React Native cheaper?
Neither is cheaper by default. The difference comes from your team's existing skills, the SDKs you need and your design. A provider should explain why it recommends one for your product.
Should a US or Nordic app launch on iOS or Android first?
StatCounter's October 2026 figures show close to even shares in the US and Norway, iOS ahead in Sweden and Denmark, and Android ahead in Finland. Check your own audience data too, because a market average may not match your customers.
Can a cross-platform app use BankID, Vipps MobilePay or Swish?
Generally yes, because these flows switch to the provider's app and back. Plan for the provider agreements, its test environment and testing on both platforms, and check the provider's current documentation before you commit.
Can I get a quote for a cross-platform app without a full specification?
Yes. A short description of your users, must-have features and integrations is enough for a first estimate. We reply to estimate requests within one business day, and after a short consultation we prepare a realistic scope, timeline and estimated budget.
